anthem recycling

Things learned from this page on the history of Russian anthems:

I guess that God Save the Czar turning into Hail Pennsylvania is no weirder than it being anachronistically incorporated into the 1812 Overture and thereby somehow becoming a Fourth of July fireworks standard at the Boston Pops Esplanade concert.

And, yes, Russia once had an anthem based on the tune of God Save the King/Queen just like everyone else.

When I wrote the lyrics for the Snake River Canyon Hymn in Act II, Scene iii of Evel! the Musical, the tune I was imagining in my head was an unconsciously lifted mangling of the Anthem of the Soviet Union (later semi-resurrected as the Putin-era Russian anthem).
