I'm gonna have to go with this being a hoax. Since the guy is an illustrator, I imagine he drew these himself to capitalize on the current LOL cats craze.
in reading the text before noticing any details of the cartoons, and even after looking at #7, which happened to catch my eye quickest, I was entirely prepared to accept it as a wonderfully bizarre historical coincidence.
