I first encountered the story via Philip José Farmer's novel/fanfic "The Other Log of Phileas Fogg', which takes the events of the story as recounted by Verne and posits that there's a bunch of behind the scenes stuff going on involving aliens. (Also Sherlock Holmes and Captain Nemo show up.)
