According to Ebert, the movie is nonetheless dedicated to Buford Pusser. But he correctly notes that the Rock doesn't seem like the sort of guy who could live down the moniker "Sheriff Pusser."
When urbeatle was visiting a couple weeks ago, we were wandering down Wisconsin Avenue near my apartment and discussing whether this movie means The Rock is the new Joe Don Baker. Perhaps this character name-change is meant to inoculate him against that possibility.
