As The Apple Turns finally noticed that iPhoto and iMovie updates quietly stopped being a free download yesterday. I was wondering when that shoe was going to drop. There was a huge stink last year when Apple even mulled over the possibility, and it seems to have slipped by mostly unnoticed this time around. Expect screaming as the light dawns, unless they and I are mistaken.
It's not all bad; apparently this stuff will still ship for free on new Macs, and the $50 price now includes not just iDVD but also GarageBand, which I'm curious about even though I admittedly spent the whole announcement thinking "if only I possessed some microscopic speck of musical ability". So there's an outside chance I'll spring for it, though I probably wouldn't pay just for the improved iPhoto. Still, buying stuff on discs is a bit of a hassle.
