Once there was a vanity press that claimed not to be one, and a cabal of science-fiction writers stung it by writing an outrageously bad novel and getting it accepted (more details and links here and here).

Scalzi helpfully linked to the complete text (PDF). I can't imagine reading the entire thing, but any given page is gut-bustingly funny.
