Mars Polar Lander crash site found?
May. 6th, 2005 11:12 pmThe Mars Global Surveyor orbiter has photographed the 1976 Viking 2 lander for sure (Viking 1, Pathfinder, and both of the current rovers have been seen already), and, what is more exciting, it just may have located the Mars Polar Lander crash site. Given a definite target, on a future pass they can use the nifty technique of compensating for spacecraft motion with a carefully programmed rotation to get a clearer image, which, with some luck, could help reveal what happened.
I imagine finding Beagle 2 would be more difficult.
