Oct. 19th, 2005 12:34 amThis heroic effort by René Pascal (on Wikimedia) is the best mosaic I've ever seen of the Huygens probe descent imager pictures of the area around its landing site on Titan. Here's his site, with more.
It must have been agonizingly difficult to make sense out of the compression-artifacted jumble. Many of the features visible here are still mysterious.
Compare with Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer images taken from space by Cassini for context. The shape of the "coastline" between bright and dark terrain photographed by Huygens is unmistakable at the center of the VIMS image.
