Concerning iTunes ratings, now that I've got a rough cut of them I'm manually tweaking some of them. You can manually change these both in iTunes and on the iPod, and I was wondering about the heuristics involved in folding the information together on syncing. I did a few experiments, and the rule seems to be something like this:

1. If the rating was changed only on the iPod since the last sync, the iPod rating takes precedence.
2. If the rating was changed in iTunes since the last sync, the iTunes rating takes precedence, whether or not it was also changed on the iPod.

This is a pretty good set of rules, I think: the idea being that in some sense the normal flow of information is from the host computer to the iPod, with a few exceptions for on-the-fly adjustments. I was wondering whether the case of change collisions actually depended on the time sequence of the iPod change and the iTunes change, but it doesn't seem to, unless there was more clock skew in my system than I thought. The lack of time dependence is probably for the best.
