...Hmm... what I saw was the original Hong Kong release on VCD. Many reviews seem to imply that the English dub was severely re-edited, in part to make the ending less of a downer, which might explain why it's often described as being plotless and incoherent. The plot of the version I saw made as much silly cheeseball sense as you could reasonably expect from a King Kong knockoff.
