click, pop, fuzz

My monitor, a big old CRT that I inherited from Sam, has developed Imminent Death Syndrome. Occasionally, it is dead, but it gets better. Clearly it is not long for this world.

I'm thinking of getting a flat panel, just because CRTs are horrible massive power-hungry things and I hate them, and we're going to have to rearrange a lot of the furniture in here for reasons you already know. But my carefree days of massive discretionary income are drawing to a close and the LCD panels in my price range are considerably lower-resolution than this thing is currently running.

On the other hand, I'm running at 1600x1200 now mostly because I can, in 3D it's really more than my video card can handle with ease, and the pixels are pretty fuzzy; it'd be nice to use something considerably not-fuzzy even if the resolution is lower. And, hey, subpixel font antialiasing.

I'm sure there was a point to this.

You can get Dell's 24" monste on sale for... $800. Which is probably more than is reasonable to drop on a monitor, especially what with and all.

Hmm, some of those Dealmac prices on 19- and 20-inchers are actually kind of tempting.

I sprang for the Dell 20-incher. We'll see. I can stand a few stuck pixels, I think.

The Dell 20-incher arrived today! 1600x1200 just like I like it.

Damn, is this a nice monitor. No stuck pixels that I've noticed yet. I was a little too late for the additional $50 off but I still kept it under $500.

I ordered the magic dongle that will let me get a digital connection through my freaky old ADC port, but I'm not sure it was really necessary; I'm getting a fine signal through the analog now. Maybe I should have held off on that.

Awesome.
