Yeah, about that--Humphry Davy apparently had a dramatic demo he did at the Royal Institution in which he made a model volcano powered by metallic potassium and water. It sounds utterly terrifying and I am not sure I would have wanted to be sitting in the front rows. I have a hypothesis that the classic baking-soda-and-vinegar science-fair volcano originated as a kid-safe version of Davy's, which was intended to demonstrate his now-discredited theory of how volcanoes work. But it's just a guess.
