When I was a young man I went on a month-long Eurailpass backpack tour of Western Europe with an old friend, and a lot of our visits to places were kind of like that--taken up mostly by the search for a hostel and a place to get dinner, since we didn't have any advance reservations anywhere. That was an adventure in itself but it meant that if we were going to see any local sights, it would be, like, one thing per city.
Now I'm old and I can't abuse my body like I used to, and I prefer my vacations to spend more time in fewer places. Even doing two major cities in a 10-day trip is pushing it. There are things we could have done to manage it better, like doing an open-jaws itinerary where we didn't have to get back to Tokyo at the end (we did that with Madrid and Valencia several years ago).
