I recall all kinds of strategies for minimizing energy consumption, like not running the engines when you didn't have to--the TIE-fighter-looking enemies are really aggressive and will come at you but the Cylon-Raider-esque ones ("cruisers", I think) will sometimes run away and you have to chase them down, which is annoying. I recall some players turning off their shields when not in combat--watch out for meteors though. With shields down, one hit will end the game. A thing that made it feel more like a simulation than an arcade game, for the time, was simply that you only had one life.
Enemies won't warp out of a sector while you're in it, but they will do so when you're not, and this happens at regular intervals. Timing is key. Even if you execute your hyperspace jump perfectly, the enemy may have left by the time you get there.
