Unless Realplayer plays something other than RealAudio, I think iTunes would have to try really, really hard to be worse.
And there are encoding plugins for it; I think there's one that lets you use the LAME MP3 encoder instead of the default (LAME is much better than any other mp3 encoding tool available, although still not as good as AAC or Vorbis).
