It's hard to see how the Higgs mechanism in the Standard Model can be avoided; the question is just what sort of field is responsible, and whether its quantum is an elementary particle or something more complicated.
There are some exotic ideas involving quantum gravity and string theory and such that supposedly imply that the associated particle doesn't exist, but I've never understood what those guys were talking about.
