The Massachusetts state Senate voted overwhelmingly to repeal the 1913 ban on marriages by out-of-staters whose marriages would not be legal in their home jurisdictions. The repeal probably won't pass the House or the governor's veto, though. Several towns will undoubtedly keep issuing licenses to out-of-staters for now, but Romney is threatening court orders. (I have a feeling that some more fun litigation is ahead, especially as regards Rhode Island.)

Thanks, Matt.

All the more reason to stick to the new plan.

Moving to MA is a good idea.

But of course they are all vague about enforcement. If one checks the intent to move box on the form, the state could theoretically check to see whether the move actually happened, but how frequently they would check is as uncodified as whether they would check.

Romney seems like the kind of governor who would round up the applications and check.

There are a multitude of non-marriage reasons to move to MA. For example, most of the job opportunities coming down the pike (haha) for [livejournal.com profile] bunnyohare are in MA. Also, our current landlord has really stepped up the pace of rental increases, to the point that it may soon become no cheaper to live here than to live in some MA towns.

Actually, that's kind of funny: Romney is providing a powerful incentive for hordes of gay people to move to Massachusetts.

And for the RI legislature, you'd think this would make them think "Oh wait, our economy will soon be in shambles if we don't legalize gay marriage. All those double income no kids gay male couples were propping up our economy."

OK, that's too extreme, and actually Brown, RISD, the Navy, and the Mafia are the ones who prop up the economy here, but still.

For Romney, if enough of us liberal gay folks move there, he won't be re-elected. Hahahaha.

The move is not final, and could take up to a year, but if you have tips on good towns to live in with reasonable rents, do tell.

I naively tell myself that such a town exists and is conveniently located right on the MBTA commuter line, preferably on the Attleboro/Stoughton line or possibly the Worcester/Framingham one. My rational self knows that apartments in places like Sharon, Mansfield, and Canton are probably few and far between (mostly single-family homes?) and are probably way, way expensive.

I just feel that my bunny has done all the tough, long commuting for several years now, and it should be my turn, or else we should be equi-distant from our respective jobs.

Reasonable rents? Here?

Actually, we moved to Malden in part because, for a town this close in to Boston, house prices were slightly lower than in comparable places, and it was well-connected by public transit. But the particular commuter rail line we're on is not very useful to me. Unfortunately I don't know much about the southern suburbs.

Also, a lawyer from GLAD has contacted us about our plans, and there is a public forum that GLAD is holding next Wednesday in some church in Providence to answer the publics' questions (or at least some of them).
