World of mystery
May. 22nd, 2004 11:49 amWe're still in the Percival Lowell stage but things will be clearer very soon.
Voyager 1 got considerably closer to Titan than Cassini is now, but it couldn't take pictures in the wavelengths necessary to look through the bright orange smog that covers the moon. This time, Cassini has infrared imaging, radar, and a probe that will attempt to land on the surface. Current speculations about what it's like down there involve seas of ethane and plastic snow. This is probably less fanciful than the dinosaurs of Venus, but I suppose it remains to be seen.
