Jesse Taylor is blogging from the convention floor so I don't have to go down there (even if I could).

From the perspective of local community relations, having the Democratic Convention at the Fleet Center is appallingly dumb: there's a brand-new convention center on the other side of town that goes empty most of the time and would have been much easier to secure. Meanwhile, the Secret Service had to figure out some way to close off all avenues of attack to a building that is essentially on top of one of the main public transit nexi of Boston and a few feet away from the brand-spanking-new I-93 tunnel. So much of the city's transportation network is going to shut down for several hours a day over the coming week.

In my case, I live pretty close to the spot where they're going to close off 93, so this is going to be worse for me than for some. Fortunately I have broadband, and I think I can get away with coming to work for half-days and trying to get back home a few hours before the road closes and the traffic starts to back up in earnest. (I suppose it could go either way: some people have suggested that 93 will be empty because everyone will be afraid of it. There could be wild oscillations.)

This is going to be interesting, in any event.
