Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

This was an extremely cool, lovely movie in many ways, but it has two major flaws at its very center: the characters of Sky Captain (Jude Law) and Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow), who are, respectively, a dour, charmless cuss and an acute sufferer of Sarah Jane Smith Disease (which I suppose is really Lois Lane Disease). She's endlessly plucky, fearless and dumb as a post, all the better to get into needless danger. At least nobody breaks a heel. I realize that Kerry Conran was trying to draw on stock characters from old Republic serials and the like when writing these two, but as
samantha2074 pointed out, they're also underacted and lacking in any real sense of fun.
That said, I think the sequel is obvious: ditch those two numbskulls and make it Frankie and Dex Versus the Martian Invasion. I'd watch that one three times at least.
...Better: Make the invaders Secret Earth Interior People. With flying saucers, lots of flaming torches and interpretive dance.
