It took me a little while to remember why the Great Seal of the State of Jefferson caused me some unease.

In both cases the image is an obvious visual pun with the same referent. Since the movie came out in 1940 and the secession movement was the next year, there may have even been direct influence, though I think if I were designing a logo for my imaginary state, the association would give me pause.

We drove past that barn during our trips to the Northwest and i wondered what the hell the State of Jefferson could be.

Hey, it's the Great Dictator symbol! I wonder if they really did choose the logo based on Chaplin's movie. Scary thought. Then again, they may just not get it; you know, like people who think Springsteen's "Born in the USA" is patriotic because they never listened to the lyrics.
