Also, reading the thread on "slipstream" that spawned it makes me feel guiltier about picking on Jonathan Lethem, who was an active SF/comics fan before he was a Mainstream Literature Guy. As I said, most of what gave me the vague feeling that his SF tropes were "supposed to seem more original than they were" was the result of how he's marketed.
