Also, reading the thread on "slipstream" that spawned it makes me feel guiltier about picking on Jonathan Lethem, who was an active SF/comics fan before he was a Mainstream Literature Guy. As I said, most of what gave me the vague feeling that his SF tropes were "supposed to seem more original than they were" was the result of how he's marketed.

The funniest bit was Meghan McCarron's

Deviations and faux-infernokrusher tropes:

infernoes/krushing only as metaphor
infernoes/krushing as resolution rather than violent irruption—trappings, but lacks sensibility

I can so see people having endless arguments over that on rec.arts.sf.written, after which somebody complains that everything printed by Baen Books was infernokrush before infernokrush was cool.
