Teresa Nielsen Hayden analyzes why the Bulwer-Lytton Contest winners aren't as funny as they ought to be. They generally don't have the sense of style of a good parody; they're basically set-up/punchline jokes, which are not nearly as funny.

Then she points to a much badder alternative. The winners from 2001 she cites are priceless.

If you like that kind of humor there are several livejournal communities that track lapses in fan fiction. The Harry Potter one, [livejournal.com profile] babb_chronicles is usually a hilarious weekly read.

Yeah I had similar thoughts about this year's winners. Half of them were just Feghoots.
