This thing is almost exactly the object described in the confused rumors bandied about just before the iPod Mini was first introduced. It wasn't possible for that price at the time, which was why I didn't believe the rumors, but it is now.

I predict disappointment that it only comes in white and black.

They're actually selling protectors for it in the Mini colors. So now it's just like having a color-changing mini!

Amazingly (to me), the Mini was actually the biggest-selling iPod model. Junking it completely and replacing it with something that has less capacity at the high end is gutsy, to say the least. But it does keep them from complicating the product line, which is something Apple seems to be careful about these days. And you know they've wanted to do a (nearly) full-featured, super-thin flash iPod for years. The price of the flash memory is finally low enough that they can make one that doesn't have laughable capacity.

When I was checking out the price for getting one over here, I ended up on the page for previewing the laser engraving, and I immediately wanted to put "Touch the monolith, monkey boy" on it.
