To tell the truth, it's more the result of a series of historical accidents that it happened (and stuck) here first. Massachusetts likes to pretend to be a culturally liberal state, but that's really only a subset of the population. I'm not at all sure that same-sex marriage would win approval in a statewide popular referendum even today, though the enormous margin by which the legislature rejected the ban is heartening.
(A few conservatives probably voted against it because they favor the more radical amendment, banning even civil unions, that comes up for consideration in 2008. But I have doubts that that could be responsible for the margin that we saw.)
