[livejournal.com profile] paracelsvs has ported his classic game Swear to Mac OS X. (He's got the Windows version there too.) It is a game about worms that follow geodesics on curved surfaces.

Between this and Which Springer-Verlag Graduate Text in Mathematics Are You?, it seems everything is reminding me of differential geometry these days.

This is the time when I relate that a friend of mine worked for Springer-Verlag as a proofreader and factchecker, but was low enough that she was also the person who covered for the receptionist on her lunch break.

To give you an idea of the phone calls that my friend and the receptionist had to cope with, let's start with their phone number: 1-800-SPRINGER. Yes, despite the 30-second message or phone-tree or whatnot that one must endure before hearing a human voice, in which the recorded message talks all about books and publishing and current publications and such, quite a lot of people still think that they have reached the Jerry Springer Show.

After the first few such idiot calls, my friend naturally commenced to arrange dates of appearance, solicit contact information so the show knows where to send the plane tickets, and regretfully inform some callers that their families might not be dysfunctional enough to appear. She didn't enjoy it, exactly, but it probably took the sting out of that odious duty somewhat.

You know what would go great with this game? John Barry's theme from The Black Hole.

As opposed to Parliament/Funkadelic's Theme From The Black Hole, which I am sure would go great with something else.
