How late did these commercials run, and where do you see them? It looks like he sold the company in 1989 when I was 17, so if I remember that cheese council ad they ran every fifteen minutes on Saturdays in Massachusetts when I was a kid I should remember this (but I don't).
I remember 'em playing in the middle of the day on WDCA-20 in Washington, in the late seventies and early eighties.
Tom Carvel did all the voiceovers personally and talked like he had about a thousand-pack-a-day habit. Just the thing to sell ice-cream cakes.
Fudgie and Cookie Puss are still around, sort of. (http://www.carvel.com/products/cakes-special_shapes.asp) I heard somewhere that these cakes were originally designed just to get some use out of the Easter Bunny and Thanksgiving Turkey molds out of season. Don't know if that's true-- obviously the molds they use for those cakes today are completely different. It's hard to imagine somebody designing something as disturbing-looking as Cookie Puss without some sort of external constraint.
That article is full of lies! First of all, Fudgie the Whale is not a fish. I mean, like, duh! He's a cake! Cookie Puss, on the other hand, is obviously an alien.
Also, the ads couldn't have gone off the airways in 1983, because I remember them, and I didn't move to New Hampshire until 1984.
