Apparently, several different people not only have different physical experiences, but different thoughts when falling asleep depending on whether they are lying on their backs, their left sides, or their right sides.

I don't think that happens to me. But I do find that it's much easier to fall asleep on my back, but that this is a very bad position for me to sleep in, with terrible snoring and sudden jerking awake and what might be apnea symptoms. I do much better on either side once I get to sleep, but it's harder to fall asleep that way.

Anyway, good night. I should be banking up sleep right now.

There's no such thing as banking sleep, and you'll still get more sleep than Sam; such is the way of things. However, you should resign yourself to having an incoherent schedule for at least the next 2 weeks while you adjust, and for about 4 weeks after that as you pretend to resume a normal existence but do so on much less sleep and much more chronic stress. We, your friends, will be understandably understanding, and will gently remind you that you're not making much sense, and look, toes! and so on.

The cats, they will never adjust. But after a few months of comparative helplessness, Marjorie will put the cats in their place (http://www.defectiveyeti.com/archives/001054.html), as seen in the linked example.

One of my favorite baby pictures is of me with our extremely scratchy cat under the dining room table. Apparently, I learned as soon as I could crawl that (like most female cats, it seems) she was protective of babies of any species and hesitant to scratch faces, so I would worm my way toward her face first on my belly with my hands behind my back.
