The rice cereal (rice-cereal-for-babies, that is, a sort of congee-like substance mixed up from an instant powder) seems to have been a big hit. Jorie was positively scarfing the stuff down and craning her neck for more like a baby bird. We made a tremendous mess, and she was interested in smushing her hands into it and banging the bowl around, but it looked to me as if a significant fraction of the stuff was going into her.

Mind you, her enthusiasm was probably at least in part because, following the package instructions for baby's first bowl, it was about 80% milk of [livejournal.com profile] samantha2074 by volume; but when you consider that Jorie mostly refuses to even drink mother's milk out of a bottle, this is a major step forward.

I can see this being a lifesaver on these Thursday nights when Sam goes to band practice and I have Jorie for three and a half to four hours without an opportunity for breastfeeding. She may still get cranky from not having Sam around, but at least she won't get too hungry. We can try the bananas again next time, or maybe mix it up a little.

Oh man, I remember that rice stuff.

When I was old enough to not eat baby food, there was still baby food in the house because I had younger siblings. I constantly had ear infections and strep as a little kid, and during those times I'd eat rice cereal because it was the only thing that didn't hurt my throat.
