I HAVE TODAY approved House Joint Resolution Number 479, designating May 1 as Loyalty Day, and calling for its appropriate observance by the people of this Nation. I am in accord with its purposes.

May 1 is Labor Day in Germany. I had the opportunity to stumble upon a Labor Day rally in a square Rothenburg ob der Tauber a few years back. It consisted of a line of some extremely orderly polite folks carrying picket signs and a speech by a labor official, followed by a brass band concert and a round of applause from the crowd.
