Workers of the world, much as I enjoy blaming George W. Bush for things, "Loyalty Day" is not new stupidity, it's old stupidity.

Aha! I can see how it might be considered to be catchier than 'Americanization Day'.

April 30 shall henceforth be known as either 'Disloyalty Day' or 'Foreignization Day', whichever.

I will note that the creepazoidal vibe people get from it is more or less justified, but dates from some combination of the First Red Scare and the Cold War.

...actually I guess it wasn't so much the First Red Scare as it was the later period of mass immigration and nativist backlash.

Did you see Ike's signing statement?
I HAVE TODAY approved House Joint Resolution Number 479, designating May 1 as Loyalty Day, and calling for its appropriate observance by the people of this Nation. I am in accord with its purposes.

The naming of May 1st as Loyalty Day conflicts, however, with the observance of that day as Child Health Day pursuant to joint resolution passed by the Congress in 1928.

If they wanted to be anti-communist, they should've called it Merit Day.

May 1 is Labor Day in Germany. I had the opportunity to stumble upon a Labor Day rally in a square Rothenburg ob der Tauber a few years back. It consisted of a line of some extremely orderly polite folks carrying picket signs and a speech by a labor official, followed by a brass band concert and a round of applause from the crowd.
