Jorie has learned enough words that in the tradition of [livejournal.com profile] crisper, I can report on her vocabulary:

Words she can definitely say: Mum, Daddy, kitty, dance, uh-oh, ball (she just progressed from "ba" to very deliberately pronouncing the final L sound, which is pretty impressive)

Words she might be working on but it's hard to tell: Jorie, Grammy, stick

Other words and phrases she clearly recognizes: clap, wave, "do the twist", "how big is Jorie?"/"SO BIG!!"

In other news, snakes go sssssssssssssss.

I'm glad 'kitty' is on the list!

"Kitty" (sometimes more "cat") was her first consistent and recognizable word after the parent-words. Now she's entranced by anything with a picture of a cat on it, as well as by the cats themselves. She was particuarly thrilled to meet Lindsey's cat Piperi, who was too lazy to run away when Jorie petted her and squealed.

She likes dogs too, but has less exposure to them.

No prepositions?

Heather thought Kenny was saying "light" before anything else, though I wasn't as certain. But the first word he used clearly, consistently, and repeatedly was "up" -- when he wanted to be picked up.

My niece Jade did that early on, though she pronounced it "bup".

Dammit. That was me with that comment.

Hulda refuses to say "mamma" or "pappa", but she does call me Thette. I think that's amusing.

My favorite is that she recognizes "do the twist" - that is priceless!

That happened by accident--the little "dance" she does is basically a baby version of the twist, usually done sitting down, and I started singing "come on baby, let's do the twist" when she did it. Then I realized that she'd start dancing whenever I mentioned the phrase. A lot more goes on in that little head than I always realize.

Aside from her few words, she's also doing a tremendous amount of preverbal babbling right now, the complicated kind with phonetics and intonation mostly in the target language that child development books call "jargon". I'm starting to get the overpowering sense that she's trying to say something that she cannot say intelligibly.

Unfortunately I don't have any good, recent pictures at the moment because (I think) I left my camera in Rockville with Brian, Christine and Jade--I hope they find it so Brian can bring it back in July! I do have a backlog of uploaded images from the past couple of months that I need to sort through and post the highlights. It's remarkable how taking care of a child this age eats up your time and energy to mess around with creative pursuits in your spare time.

I had a horrible time getting my son to say "mommy", "mama", etc.
He called me by my first name because I think no one else referred to me as anything beginning with "m".
