I have no idea whether the Bush administration is actually planning to sell us on an impending series of air strikes on Iran, or if this is just another one of the blogger panics that have periodically erupted on the subject. I'm also no kind of expert on this subject, as is abundantly clear from my past behavior. But James Fallows, the guy who wrote this about Iraq in 2002, achieving eerie prescience through the paranormal procedure of talking to lots of experts, went on to write this about Iran in 2006 followed by this in 2007, and I've resolved to keep paying attention to him.

I've never gotten the idea, from the Administration or elsewhere, that a shootin' war against Iran, either following this war or as a consequence of their participation against us in it, was desireable by anyone but nutjobs who don't count. From everything I've seen, it's like bringing back the draft-- a scare tactic from the anti-Bush side. That's one element of several-- the prospect of a permanent state of war, a Bush theocracy, an Imperial Advance by America, an Iran war, and the draft, are all things I've heard predicted either by someone who has lost touch with the reality I seem to inhabit, or else deliberately put forth as a tactic to sour Iraq-war-supporters on the whole enterprise.

James Fallows seems to think that the VP is in the military chain of command-- I think that's not correct, unless he meant that the VP has pull with his boss, the CinC.
