mmcirvinLiberal japonicus of Obsidian Wings has some background and context on the Japan earthquake and tsunami. He's in the US right now but used to live in Sendai. Commenter Sekaijin has a report from Tokyo, but Tokyo didn't get the worst of it.
It does sound as if, for all the horror of this disaster, the combination of warning systems, good evacuation practices and good building codes will turn out to have reduced the death toll far below that of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. The situation with the nuclear plants is worth watching closely.
