mmcirvincaused us no significant trouble at all. My parents and my sister's family in Virginia are still without power, and probably will be for some time.
Eastern Massachusetts was on the right side of the storm path, which with tropical storms in the Northern Hemisphere is the side that gets higher winds but less rain. As it turned out, that was probably the better side to be on. Our house is well-situated for protection from storm winds coming from the south; we have hills rising to the south, east and west. Also, while NWS forecasts had predicted 40-50 mph winds gusting to hurricane force for much of the day, the winds we actually got were consistently 10-20 mph slower than that, and by the time of closest approach of the storm center, it had weakened and lost organization to the point that many places around here were almost calm. It actually got windier after the storm passed. Meanwhile, Irene was still capable of dumping flooding torrential rain on Vermont.
Still, it looks like just about everyone in Rhode Island and on the South Shore lost electricity, and some people a few blocks from here did too, so I guess we were even luckier than that.
