I was going to complain about the windstorm blowing an unidentified flying object into my windshield today (probably a bird—the sucker was moving so fast I couldn't tell much), just when I thought I was finished having my car repaired. But it could have been a lot worse.

Yikes

Out here in Seattle, we've had a couple of ferry groundings and allisions (which is to say collisions between a vessel and a fixed or moored object or vessel), most memorably because of an inexperienced watch officer ramping up the throttle (he was approaching too fast and though the engines were in reverse as always, he was running it too fast) which caused an automatic engine shutdown, and the ferry's inertia carried it into the Colman Dock at Seattle (IIRC). Did some damage, but not too many injuries (fall-related), definitely no deaths. I can't believe that happened-- it seems unconscionable to me, and I speak as a former ferry commuter who takes trips on them from time to time when visiting my parents.

I don't get shocked much, but this shocks me, seriously.

It's actually not clear whether the high winds had anything to do with the ferry crash. Not a lot is clear at this point. I just heard that one of the captains bugged out and ran home from the wreck, and (another one? the same one?) slashed his wrist and shot himself with a pellet gun afterward.

Ah, I see it was added to that very story.

And now it appears that the pilot was asleep or elsehow unconscious at the helm. Hoo-boy.
