I think there JUST MIGHT be a little problem with the polygon clipping function in the Panther driver for the Radeon 7500. (Fortunately you only get this if you turn on the vertex programs. The ring patterns look a little wobbly and mis-mapped in this mode, too, which makes me think there's more to it than the clipping. This did not happen under 10.2.)

Indeed. Here is a nice recent example. You really ought to see that thing moving, though.

At one point, I tried to render a gradient on a spherical sky efficiently in software, but my transformation matrix broke down, causing the screen to look like some sort of Persian carpet. I also had some other problems with that particular code.
