You'll be crushed to know that the OS 10.3.2 update came with a fixed ATI driver that eliminated the entertaining vertex shader clipping bug. Rendering Saturn in Celestia with that mode is still butt-slow with ring shadows turned on, and the rings project shadows on Saturn but not vice versa, but I think that is just because my graphics card is teh suck.

Up until the latest line of Radeons, ATI was guaranteed suck compared to its peers. Now it seems that the tables have turned. Ah, the computer industry is such a fun ride.

Actually, when I bought this computer I got the downmarket ATI partly to save a little money, but also partly because there were scary reports of bizarre quality-control problems with the Nvidia cards that Apple was then shipping as the default standard equipment. There's nothing obviously wrong with it (and it handles Apple's Quartz Extreeeeme eye candy with no trouble); it's just a little underpowered for modern heavy-duty games and such. I do suspect that on that future day when I finally justify upgrading this computer in some way, it will be with a new giganto-monitor and a heftier video card.
