My monitor, a big old CRT that I inherited from Sam, has developed Imminent Death Syndrome. Occasionally, it is dead, but it gets better. Clearly it is not long for this world.

I'm thinking of getting a flat panel, just because CRTs are horrible massive power-hungry things and I hate them, and we're going to have to rearrange a lot of the furniture in here for reasons you already know. But my carefree days of massive discretionary income are drawing to a close and the LCD panels in my price range are considerably lower-resolution than this thing is currently running.

On the other hand, I'm running at 1600x1200 now mostly because I can, in 3D it's really more than my video card can handle with ease, and the pixels are pretty fuzzy; it'd be nice to use something considerably not-fuzzy even if the resolution is lower. And, hey, subpixel font antialiasing.

I'm sure there was a point to this.

Windows had it earlier, but Mac OS X got a pretty good implementation a few versions back.

And Windows's implementation is probably closely tied to TrueType-based font rendering, which means Apple's PDF-based implementation isn't even similar enough to violate a patent.
